In June 2014, a team of scientists determined that the Da Nang 1000-year-old banyan tree is about 800 years old. It is from here that the 1000-year-old banyan tree in Da Nang is recognized as a heritage tree of Vietnam.

The 1000-year-old banyan tree in Da Nang has a height of over 20 meters, standing proudly in the middle of Da Nang’s heaven and earth combined with luxuriant foliage to form a special symbol of the Son Tra Peninsula. In addition, this banyan tree, which is about a thousand years old, has a circumference of up to 10 meters, hundreds of huge and little auxiliary roots that extend deep into the ground, and a high lip on its secondary roots up to 25 meters.

The banyan tree, which was found in 1771, is situated more than 10 kilometers northeast of Da Nang’s city center. The 1,000-year-old banyan tree in Da Nang is part of the Son Tra Peninsula, which is home to many interesting tourist sites. It is situated in the nature reserve of Son Tra Mountain combined with a variety of vibrant flora and wildlife on the peninsula. The banyan tree at Son Tra Mountain also becomes a must-see sight.

How to get to there

When visiting Son Tra Peninsula, travelers need to move to the top of Son Tra Mountain to admire the beauty of the 1000-year-old banyan tree in Da Nang. There are several ways to go to the banyan tree’s location; we’ll show you the two most common.

Option 1: This route will begin at Song Han Bridge (or Dragon Bridge) running to My Khe Beach road, then visitors need to move along this coastal road in the direction of Linh Ung Pagoda. Linh Ung Pagoda is directly on the beach, so visitors will notice it immediately away. After passing through Linh Ung Pagoda, tourists will come to a fork with a signboard. Visitors follow the signpost named “banyan tree”, this sign will lead you to a road. The road is rather narrow, yet it will take visitors to the desired location.

Option 2: Visitors can follow the road to the top of Ban Co. On the road leading to the top of Ban Co, visitors will encounter a bifurcation in the road, you need to turn to the right. This road is quite small and steep at a position on the mountainside. As a result, visitors should proceed with caution and a firm grip on the steering wheel. Just go straight and you will reach the location of the banyan tree.

The journey to Son Tra peninsula is relatively easy, but the approach to the summit of Son Tra mountain and the 1000-year-old banyan tree is quite zigzag and requires patience from visitors.
